Addiction to opioids begins with the body developing a tolerance. This can occur after only 2 or 3 days. The patient might begin to feel that the prescribed dose of opioids is no longer effective and increases the dose. This means the person develops cravings for the opioid when the effects are wearing off, and they may start to experience symptoms of withdrawal.
