START (formerly the Addiction Research & Treatment Corporation or ARTC) started treating patients in a single building at 937 Fulton Street in Fort Greene, Brooklyn and is now one of New York State’s largest non-hospital providers of health and individual services. For more than 40 years, They have offered treatment to over 40,000 self-referred patients throughout Brooklyn, Manhattan and The Bronx.
Today, they continue to offer holistic care when treating those with opioid addiction and co-occurring mental illness to transition their patients toward healthy and productive lives. In 1985, they added primary medical care including HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis C services and, in 2011, was contracted by the state to give mental health care for juveniles in two detention facilities.
Their seven community-based treatment programs use individual and group counseling with medical and behavioral health professionals to treat victims, and some clinics offer short-term, outpatient detoxification and a drug-free chemical dependence program for other non-opiate addictions.
Since the 1970s, Their doctors and patients have participated in a wide range of behavioral and biomedical studies focusing on substance use and its complications including HIV-related research beginning in the late 1980s. Their research has been supported by the National Institute on Drug Abuse; the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases; the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; Bristol-Myers Squibb; OraSure Technologies, Inc. They continue to share the results of its research through scientific presentations throughout the nation and the world and via articles in renowned experimental journals.
