In 1968, Phoenix House became an independent nonprofit group and has since grown to become the nation’s leading offerer of alcohol and drug abuse treatment and prevention services operating 97 programs at 52 areas across nine states. Currently, they care for a population of 3,530 men, women, and adolescents. They work with teens at risk, support clients in recovery, and offer a wide range of therapy options for adults and adolescents. These involve assessment and evaluation, detoxification, outpatient and residential programs, sober living residences, after-school and day programs for teens, case management, special women’s services, and programs that assist substance abusers with mental health problems.
In 1983, they opened its first Phoenix House Academy, a residential high school where teens can make up education lost to drugs and recapture opportunities for higher education and careers. In 2005, they were designated a “model program” by the U.S. Department of Justice. Their treatment philosophy is based on the understanding that alcoholism is a chronic disease. Individuals suffering from substance use diseases deserve evidence-based treatment in settings that offer secrecy and dignity.

Our adolescent programs do not permit smoking. Our adult programs allow smoking in designated areas but we do not encourage it, and we offer smoking cessation and wellness counseling to help those who wish to quit. We can provide nicotine replacement therapy such as patches, and we can offer medication to aid in quitting. This choice is yours and we’re here to help if you make the decision to quit.
Yes, Phoenix House accepts self-payment, with different rates for services depending on the program. As a not-for-profit provider, we believe strongly in making treatment available to those who need it. We provide state-, county-, and Medicaid-funded services to qualifying individuals.
